On that day, Congress voted to raise six companies of riflemen from Pennsylvania, two from Maryland, and two from Virginia — the first federal fighting force. The next day, June 15, Congress unanimously selected George Washington of Virginia to serve as General and Commander-in-Chief. Washington accepted without salary, asking only for reimbursement of expenses. From these humble beginnings grew the institution that today numbers nearly 480,000 active-duty soldiers, 336,000 Army National Guard, and 189,000 Army Reserve — a total force of over one million.
