US Army Birthday: 251 Years of The Defense of Our Nation

The United States Army was born on June 14, 1775 — over a year before the Declaration of Independence and two years before the American flag. As America's oldest and largest military service, the Army has defended the nation through every major conflict, from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror. On this day, soldiers past and present celebrate 251 years of service, sacrifice, and the unbroken line from the Continental Army to today's force.

What Is the Army Birthday?

The Army Birthday marks the founding of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1775 — the same body that would declare independence 13 months later. On that day, Congress voted to raise six companies of riflemen from Pennsylvania, two from Maryland, and two from Virginia — the first federal fighting force. The next day, June 15, Congress unanimously selected George Washington of Virginia to serve as General and Commander-in-Chief. Washington accepted without salary, asking only for reimbursement of expenses. From these humble beginnings grew the institution that today numbers nearly 480,000 active-duty soldiers, 336,000 Army National Guard, and 189,000 Army Reserve — a total force of over one million.

Historical Coincidence: June 14 is also Flag Day — the anniversary of the adoption of the US flag in 1777. The Army is two years older than the flag it serves under. The Continental Congress simply made history on the same date in consecutive years.
